History of the Land Rover

The Land Rover Series range was launched in 1948 and the model, now known as the Defender, was launched in 1983 and the continuous run finished in January 2016, after 67 years. Land Rovers were inspired by the US-built Willys Jeep immediately after the war and by 1992 they claimed that 70% of all the vehicles they had ever built were still in use. The Defender and Series ranges have had unique international presence throughout the production run, having been exported, manufactured and produced under licence by a number of other manufacturers in a variety of markets, to include Australia, Southern and North Africa, Turkey, Brazil, Pakistan and Malaysia, to name just a few. In 1993 Land Rover decided to take the plunge into the US market after their successful launch of the Range Rover brand in 1987 in order to offer an upmarket alternative to the Jeep Wrangler targeted at adventurous buyers.  Land Rover finally had to retract their offering from the North American and Canadian markets in 1997 due to economic viability. The defenders offered in the US during the 90’s had to be significantly modified in comparison to Land Rover’s other export markets. Subsequent federal safety regulation amendments finally withdrew the defender from the US market entirely in 1997, with Land Rover throwing their attention towards upmarket Discovery and Range Rover models that were being built from the ground up.

The Car

This 1989 Land Rover 90 is a left-hand drive example that was sold new in Paris, France, and is said to have remained in France until the selling dealer imported it to the UK in September 2019. The truck is finished in beige over a black interior, and power is provided by a 2.5-liter turbodiesel inline-four mated to a five-speed manual gearbox and a two-speed transfer case. Now showing 205k kilometers (~127k miles), this 90 is now offered by the selling dealer in London, England, with partial service records, books and manuals, and French export registration.

Beige paint is contrasted with white and gray graphics, black-painted bumpers, headlight surrounds, and a black grille. The selling dealer states the left-front fender was repainted, and the rear door glass was replaced with plexiglass. Imperfections include a crack in the rear tailgate door behind the spare wheel, wear on the running boards, and scratches and dings that are highlighted in the gallery below.

White 15″ steel wheels are mounted with Kumho Road Venture AT tires in the front and Black-Star Globe-Trotter tires at the rear. The selling dealer notes that both mud flaps show splits and were repaired with metal bolts.

Interior equipment includes gray cloth seats with a contrasting black dash, body-color floors, and four-spoke steering wheel. Wear spots can be seen on the driver’s floor, and corrosion noted in the passenger footwell is highlighted in the gallery below.

The six-digit odometer shows 205k kilometers (~127k miles).

The 2.5-liter turbodiesel inline-four sends power to the wheels through a five-speed manual transmission and two-speed transfer case with a locking center differential. A leak is noted from the power steering box, and the selling dealer reports that the truck will receive a fluid service prior to delivery to the new owner.

Additional photos of the underbody, suspension, and exhaust are viewable above. A video is provided below.
