History of the Land Rover

The Land Rover Series range was launched in 1948 and the model, now known as the Defender, was launched in 1983 and the continuous run finished in January 2016, after 67 years. Land Rovers were inspired by the US-built Willys Jeep immediately after the war and by 1992 they claimed that 70% of all the vehicles they had ever built were still in use. The Defender and Series ranges have had unique international presence throughout the production run, having been exported, manufactured and produced under licence by a number of other manufacturers in a variety of markets, to include Australia, Southern and North Africa, Turkey, Brazil, Pakistan and Malaysia, to name just a few. In 1993 Land Rover decided to take the plunge into the US market after their successful launch of the Range Rover brand in 1987 in order to offer an upmarket alternative to the Jeep Wrangler targeted at adventurous buyers.  Land Rover finally had to retract their offering from the North American and Canadian markets in 1997 due to economic viability. The defenders offered in the US during the 90’s had to be significantly modified in comparison to Land Rover’s other export markets. Subsequent federal safety regulation amendments finally withdrew the defender from the US market entirely in 1997, with Land Rover throwing their attention towards upmarket Discovery and Range Rover models that were being built from the ground up.

Condition

Interior

The interior presents fantastically for a car of this year. It should be noted that the dashboard is in good condition however the binnacle has some cracking in, The vehicle comes with replacement front floor mats. The rear luggage presents in its original factory paint finish and there are signs of thinning of the paint in places from wear and tear that has revealed the aluminium. The rear compartment is fitted with a two seat brown cloth bench and cargo barricade which would imply the front chequered seats are a later addition.

Exterior

The exterior of the car is in very complete condition.  The paint is mostly original with the exception of a few areas that have been touched up in the original colour. Most notably the sill panel below doors and the passenger front fender/wing. Underneath presents well and it evident the vehicle has likely not been under sealed which is a nice positive for the next owner is allows you to have a full understanding of the condition before carrying out any preventive under sealing protection. The rear cross member has also been recently refinished.

Paint

Overall the vehicle presents with a fantastic period patina with the original country Turbo D specification decals. It could just as easily be left as a survivor and enjoyed or painted depending on your preference.

Glass

The glass presents well with no chips or cracks to the front windscreen or any notable damage to other windows. The window rubbers and seals are in good condition and not showing any signs of perishing and cracks.

Wheels

This particular model is fitted with Land Rover original 16 inch steel wheels. Note that these are not the common export specification ro-styles wheels often seen on continental Land Rovers. It's also worth noting that the French specification land Rovers only came with one will holder on the rear door and no hood carrier as often seen on Italian spec vehicles.
